CHADD is not just a magazine, conference, support group, website, or parenting class.  Though we provide these, we do not just help those who seek CHADD.

CHADD works to improve the lives of ALL individuals with AD/HD reach their inherent potential.

  • In recent months, AD/HD became listed as a disability adulthood, not just in childhood, by the Social Security Administration.   Members of our local Adult Group, along with CHADD National, provided testimony about how AD/HD can impact employees in the workplace.
  • CHADD distributed an Educators’ Guide to every public school in the United States, and Puerto Rico.
  • CHADD was instrumental in getting AD/HD named as a disability under special education law, under “Other Health Impaired.”

Locally, in addition to providing two monthly meetings and CHADD’s parenting class, “Parent to Parent,” CHADD of Grand Rapids works with other organizations in Kent County to support common causes.

  • CHADD of GR, along with people representing other organizations, have planned Roundtable Luncheons, attended by hundreds of stakeholders in the community.  The West Michigan Mental Health Parity Discussion Group has been working to promote equitable insurance coverage between physical and mental health.
  • CHADD of GR helped plan a Roundtable Event  that discussed Integrating Mental and Physical Health Care through the use of Wagner’s chronic care model, electronic medical records, and by providing “medical homes” at one site.
  • CHADD of GR, the West Michigan Mental Health Parity Discussion Group, the Mental Health Foundation, “network 180,” the Kent County Health Department, Proaction Behavioral Health, and the West Michigan Hip Hop Coalition helped plan a Hip Hop as an outreach to youth to encourage them to seek help if they suspect they may be  dealing with a mental disorder or addiction.  CHADD of GR provided tee shirts to volunteers at the event.
  • CHADD of GR has served on an advisory committee regarding adult community mental health services in Kent County since 2000.
  • CHADD of GR also serves on an advisory committee regarding community mental health services for children and families.  CHADDGR helped plan a carnival to kick off a new system of care to help coordinate services between Education, Mental Health, Juvenile Justice, and the Dept. of Human Services for children and families. CHADD of GR provided volunteers to help in Arts and Crafts.
  • CHADD of GR attends a monthly meeting for parents of children with disabilities called ACT.  It is working with “network 180” to pilot a new Independent Supports Coordinator model.
  • CHADD of Grand Rapids helped plan “Disability Awareness Day,” October, 2010. Committee members have already started meeting monthly to plan next year’s event.
